TORONTO - One night a shootout, the next night a punch-up, complete with grappling goalies.

Who says pre-season games are boring?

The battle to win spots in the lineup for the Maple Leafs and Sabres gave way to a War of 1812 remake on Sunday at the Air Canada Centre. Halfway through the third period, after Buffalo pulled within a goal of the Leafs and Jamie Devane dropped Corey Tropp of Buffalo on the ensuing faceoff, all hell broke loose on Bay St.

Buffalo behemoth John Scott came out on the next draw and made a move towards Leafs star Phil Kessel, who slashed at Scott, but was rescued by Toronto special forces, including David Clarkson who appeared off the Toronto bench, which could mean a suspension.

Everyone grabbed a partner, creating the very rare spectacle of Kessel and linemate Tyler Bozak in simultaneous scraps.

But the main event was to come.
