OTTAWA - Alexei Ponikarovsky made amends, and Al Montoya made every save.
As a result, the Winnipeg Jets snapped a three-game losing streak on the road and got out of the nation’s capital with a 1-0 win over the Ottawa Senators at Scotiabank Place on Saturday afternoon.
Montoya was forced to make the start because the flu hit Ondrej Pavelec hard, and he turned aside all 33 shots he faced for his third career shutout. His previous donut came on Feb. 19, 2011, when he made 35 saves for the New York Islanders against the L.A. Kings.
Ponikarovsky, meanwhile, took a terrible penalty late in the third period on Thursday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Buds scored the eventual game-winning goal. On Saturday afternoon he ended up playing the role of hero.
The Jets improved to 5-5-1, while the Sens fell to 6-4-2 and have reached the quarter pole of their season.
