When Alex Ovechkin opened the scoring just 49 seconds into the game, it continued a strong trend. The Caps now have outscored opponents 10-0 in the opening minute of periods this ae surrendered the first goal of the game a woeful 35 times.

At one point, the Leafs had a shots-on-goal edge of 11-2 but it didn't matter. The potent Caps scored four times on Vesa Toskala in their first 12 shots.

The Leafs had a pair of would-be goals called back, both the correct call. In the first period, the net clearly was knocked off when the puck crossed the line and the Caps' Tom Poti was given a high-sticking penalty. In the second, Matt Stajan's effort was called back because of a high-sticking penalty to Alexei Ponikarovsky.
