LOOKING FOR LUKE

Second-year defenceman Luke Schenn was glued to the bench for much of the third period Thursday in Carolina as he logged a season-low nine minutes and 26 seconds ice time. Wilson once again rejected the notion that the struggling D-man is a prime candidate for demotion.

"We've just got to be patient with Luke and stop worrying about him," Wilson said yesterday.

CAPITAL GAINS

Given their season-long struggles, the Capitals may be one of the last teams the Leafs would want to face at this point. But forward Lee Stempniak relishes the challenge of facing Alex Ovechkin and company.

"For us, it will be a good test," Stempniak said yesterday. "Obviously they are a very explosive team but they are fun games to play in. You want to beat the best."
