KILLING TIME

After the Leafs penalty killing unit laboured through 2008-09 in 30th spot and for much of this season as well, they seem to finally have their act together. They were perfect in three games before last night (11-for-11) and then defused four Detroit chances, including a brief two-man advantage second period.

BLOCK PARTY

The Leafs blocked 14 shots in the first two periods, including two by defenceman Francois Beauchemin with his goalie, Jonas Gustavsson, out of position.

GOOD NEW, BAD NEWS

Wings' Daniel Cleary had his 100th NHL goal to break Gustavsson's shutout bid in the third period, but teammate Jason Williams had to be helped off the ice after an awkward collision with the boards in the second period.
