The Vancouver Canucks took the first steps in revamping their bottom six by signing centres Manny Malhotra and Joel Perrault on Thursday.

Malhotra, 30, will earn $7.5 million over three years and fills the third-line centre void left by the expected departure of Kyle Wellwood.

He also has a no-trade clause.

The Mississauga, Ont. native scored 14 goals, 33 points, and was a plus-17 with the San Jose Sharks last season.

Although Malhotra's contract comes at a pricey $2.5 million cap hit, Canucks GM Mike Gillis said last week that one of the team's top priorities is to add size and depth to the bottom half of Vancouver's offensive group, assets which Malhotra provides.

He also gives the Canucks another option in the faceoff circle after finishing second in the playoffs with a 60.7 winning percentage.

Perrault will compete for a third or fourth line job with the Canucks, after playing only two games with Phoenix last campaign.

The 27-year-old has a career 26 points and a minus-17 in 89 games.
