John Ferguson was a busy man yesterday when he was not dealing with Michael Peca.

The Maple Leafs general manager re-signed centre Kyle Wellwood to a two-year contract, one that will pay Wellwood $800,000 US next season and $950,000 in 2007-08.

The average of $875,000 will count against the salary cap in the next two seasons. Wellwood had 11 goals and 34 assists in 81 games as a rookie in 2005-06.

Also signed were defencemen Carlo Colaiacovo, Jay Harrison and Brendan Bell.

Colaiacovo accepted his qualifying offer of $901,740 and Harrison and Bell signed deals that will pay them $450,000 with the Leafs or $85,000 Cdn if they play for the AHL's Toronto Marlies.

Forward Kris Newbury also accepted his qualifying offer.

Ferguson is working on getting Matt Stajan's name on a new contract as well.

Each of Colaiacovo, Harrison and Bell, along with Staffan Kronwall, Andy Wozniewski and Ian White, will have a crack at a starting job on the blue line.

"It's exciting to know there are (two or three) openings, but you have to earn it," Harrison said. "And you have to realize a lot has to fall into place."
