NHL free-agent signings

- Jason Spezza returned to the Ottawa Senators for two years at $9 million US.

- The San Jose Sharks, stung by a couple of defections to the Los Angeles Kings engineered by ex-Sharks' GM Dean Lombardi, brought forwards Curtis Brown and Mike Grier into the fold. Grier, a big part of the Buffalo Sabres run to the conference final, will get three years at $5.3 million. Brown's terms were not revealed.

- The Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes lost defenceman Aaron Ward to the New York Rangers, who had missed out on the big-name blueliners on Saturday.

- Forward Dan Hinote departs the Colorado Avalanche for the St. Louis Blues, who already scored big with free agents Doug Weight from Carolina and defenceman Jay McKee from the Sabres. The Blues also signed Bill Guerin, who was bought out by the Dallas Stars last week. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

- Defenceman Brendan Witt has found a new home for at least the next three years. Witt agreed to a three-year contract with the New York Islanders. Terms were not released.

- Veteran defenceman Teppo Numminen agreed to a one-year contract that will keep him with the Buffalo Sabres.

- After one year with the New York Rangers, Steve Rucchin is headed to the Atlanta Thrashers. Atlanta also signed Glen Metropolit, who has played the past three years with teams in Europe.
