When it came to Joe DiPenta, the Vancouver Canucks gambled and lost.

The Canucks chose not to pick up the option of the veteran defenceman, who was one of the anchors of the Manitoba Moose defence corps last season.

Canucks assistant GM Steve Tambellini said at the time the team was still hoping to re-sign DiPenta but they weren't the only team interested in his services.

The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim inked DiPenta to a one-year contract yesterday, leaving a signficant hole on the Moose blue-line.

DiPenta, an outstanding penalty killer and tremendous leader, had two goals, 12 points and 48 penalty minutes in 73 regular season games last season and added five assists in 17 Calder Cup playoff games.

The 26-year-old was selected in the third round (61st overall) of the 1998 draft by the Florida Panthers and appeared in three NHL games with the Atlanta Thrashers in 2002-03, producing a goal and an assist.

The Ducks also officially announced the re-signing of Winnipegger Mike LeClerc yesterday.

LeClerc, a third round pick (55th overall) of the Mighty Ducks in 1995, had an injury-plagued season in 2003-04 but was one of the key contributors as the Mighty Ducks pushed the New Jersey Devils to the seventh and deciding game of the Stanley Cup final in 2003.

Mighty Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle named Dave Farrish one of his assistant coaches earlier this week.

BOUCK RE-SIGNS

Former Moose winger Tyler Bouck re-signed with the Vancouver Canucks yesterday.

The product of Camrose, Alta., suited up for the Moose during parts of three seasons before closing out the 2003-04 campaign with the Canucks.

Bouck, 25, spent last season playing for TPS Turku in Finland, where he had three goals, 10 points and 100 penalty minutes on a team that featured Montreal Canadiens captain Saku Koivu.

Bouck, a second round selection (57th overall) pick of the Dallas Stars in 1998, has appeared in 73 NHL games with the Canucks, Phoenix Coyotes and Stars.
