John Ferguson signed centre Alexander Steen, the club's first choice in the 2002 draft. Until now, Steen was playing in Sweden.

He was born in Winnipeg, the son of Jets' star Thomas Steen, who played 14 years for John Ferguson Sr., that club's general manager.

"Alex was born the year I went away to college, but our dads were great friends and we know the family well," Ferguson Jr. said.

Also signing yesterday was Swedish defenceman Staffan Kronwall.

HAMRLIK SAYS NO TO T.O.

Roman Hamrlik, one of the top defencemen remaining on the National Hockey League free-agent list, has condensed his desired destination to four cities, but Toronto is not included.
