Gonchar to Pens
Report: Defenceman signs five-year, $25-million contract


PITTSBURGH (CP) -- The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed free agent defenceman Sergei Gonchar to a $25-million, five-year contract, according to a source.

The 31-year-old Russian, who has played in three all-star games, has spent most of his careeer with the Washington Capitals, but was traded to Boston midway through the 2003-04 season.

Gonchar, a six-foot-two, 215-pound blue-liner, had 11 goals and 47 assists in 71 games with the Capitals and Bruins in 2003-04.

He has 148 goals and 277 assists in 669 career NHL games.
