As great goodbyes go, it couldn't have gone much better.

Oh, there could have been a goal. But other than that, it was pretty much perfect for Ryan Smyth in his going away game. It was as big a love in as any individual Oiler, including all the great ones, ever had.

“I soaked every moment of it in,” Smyth began as he stood in full uniform including his skates in the interview room.

“It was an awesome experience that I'll never forget the rest of my life.

“I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of putting on this jersey. To see the fans appreciation from the start to the end ... I'm thoroughly honoured to stand up here today and say I enjoyed every moment and the fans were a huge part of it.”

At 9:04 a.m. Mayor Don Iveson declared it Ryan Smyth Day in Edmonton.
