EDMONTON - When Sam Gagner signed a three-year contract with the Oilers last summer, amid assurances he wouldn’t be traded, he sort of counted on spending three more years in Edmonton.

But in the moving target world that is professional sports, things change.

Guys break their jaw, teams sink to the bottom of the standings, owners have to write apology letters.

And then, all bets are off.

So Gagner’s name began surfacing in multiple trade rumours this season and, for all we know, might have even come up in actual trade talks a time or two.

“If we had had a better year and I myself was having a better year, there’s really no discussion,” said Gagner, who made it to Wednesday’s trade deadline without having to pack anything.

“When you’re going into a deadline and your team is known as sellers because you’re going to miss the playoffs, everyone’s name is going to be in trade rumours. That’s the way the business goes.
