NEW YORK - The Edmonton Oilers have been struggling to generate offence, so they’ve decided to try something different.

On Thursday, when they take on the New York Rangers in the third of a four-game road trip, David Perron will play with Sam Gagner and Jordan Eberle on the second line. Nail Yakupov will be moved up to the top line with Taylor Hall and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

“I played with him (Eberle) early in the year, but I don’t think we’ve tried that combination with Gags (Gagner) and Ebs, so it should be interesting,” Perron said following practice Wednesday. “Ebs can be trusted on both sides of the puck and he’s a really good player. He’s proven himself over the years that he’s been in the league. It’s always a fun challenge to play with a guy like him.”

Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins had reservations about breaking up his top line, considering they were the only unit creating offence.

However, Monday’s performance in Buffalo convinced him otherwise.
