EDMONTON - On December 23, in the wake of an Oiler fan taking of his sweater and throwing it on the ice, your correspondent called out Edmonton Oilers owner Daryl Katz and president of hockey operations Kevin Lowe.

“It’s time for the two of them to deliver a message to the fans of this franchise,” I wrote that day.

Well, he waited 20 days into the New Year, but the reclusive Katz finally did it.

The owner, who only seems to come out in public once a year to climb up on stage with his kid when the Oilers draft their latest No. 1 overall draft pick, finally delivered a message in the form of a letter to the fans.

So, does this do it?

I think it does.

It doesn’t add any more wins to the standings. It won’t make many more fans feel any less like throwing their sweater on the ice the next time they lose 6-0 to one of those big, heavy teams who don’t need to do much more than breathe on them the way the Oilers are currently constructed.
