EDMONTON - A Facebook page calling for the firing of Edmonton Oilers president Kevin Lowe is gaining traction amongst disgruntled fans.
The page dubbed "Kevin Lowe has to go" was created on Jan. 4 and has since attracted over 6,100 followers.
The page's creator John, who asked not to have his real name released, says the blame for the Oilers' current seven-year playoff drought should be put squarely on the shoulders of Lowe, who has been with the organization since 1998 but took over as president of hockey operations in the 2008-09 season.
“In the end, this thing should run like a business and your president is responsible for anything that goes on underneath him,” said John. “If I owned a company and my president fires five key employees in six years, there’s something wrong with policy not the employee.”
In an effort to help spread the message, John and a group of friends started selling stickers at bars that read “This is as Lowe as we go!!”
But on Friday night, when the Oilers took on the Pittsburgh Penguins, those handing stickers out for free outside Rexall Place got in trouble with security and were asked to leave the premises.
They eventually relocated to the nearby LRT station, but when one of the group members returned to the property to get his car, he was confronted by security and handed a ticket with a one-year ban from the facility.
