Oilers assistant coaches' fates uncertain under new bench boss

Kelly Buchberger has been an assistant coach with the Edmonton Oilers for the past five years, but he seemingly has to interview for his job every season.

With the hiring of Dallas Eakins, it appears as though Buchberger will again be called upon to prove his merit to the organization.

Eakins becomes the fifth head coach in Buchberger’s tenure with the club, once more, putting the future of the current assistants in doubt.

“I’m going to sit down and get to know the guys,” Eakins said on Monday. “We will be looking to add to the staff if that works. I have to assess what’s going on here. It’s one of those things where you come into an organization and I don’t know if the video guy is the best guy in the league, or he’s sub par.

“Kelly and Steve (Smith) might be two of the best assistants in the NHL. I don’t know. I have to get to know them and see how that’s going to go.”
