EDMONTON - Ryan Whitney will not be back on the Edmonton Oilers blue line next season.

The veteran defenceman, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, feels it’s probably in his best interest to get a fresh start. The Oilers seem to be in mutual agreement.

It’s the only thing the two sides have seemingly agreed on this season.

“The year started off slowly and I thought I started playing a lot better, but I think the damage had already been done around here for me,” Whitney said Sunday as the team cleared out their lockers. “Unfortunately, I was kind of pegged in a spot where I was the fifth and sixth defenceman and I had to battle to stay there.

“At some point it really didn’t matter what I did, I wasn’t getting higher. But I had some solid games, I still really believe in myself and I’m just looking forward to next year and a fresh start.”
