There were few players more relieved to see the trade deadline pass than Ryan Whitney.

The Edmonton Oilers defenceman had been playing with practically one foot out the door, speculated to be on the move prior to Wednesday’s trade moratorium.

But due to his recent play and the team’s standing in the playoff race, Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini decided to keep Whitney in the fold, despite the probability of losing him to unrestricted free agency this summer.

“It was great, it was just a good feeling,” said Whitney prior to Thursday’s game in Vancouver against the Canucks. “If I’d gone to another team, it probably would have been to team in the playoffs or competing for a spot. But to be able to do it here is a lot more special, because I’ve been here all year.

“I just feel good knowing I’m here the rest of the year and who knows after that? But for right now, it’s just a good time to be a part of this team.”
