DETROIT - Brendan Smith was one up on his buddy, Justin Schultz, heading into Thursday’s encounter between the Detroit Red Wings and Edmonton Oilers.

The Red Wings rookie defenceman went up against his former University of Wisconsin teammate during the lockout earlier this year. They met for the first time at the NHL level Thursday.

“I played him in the AHL one game when he was playing with Oklahoma City and I was in Grand Rapids,” Smith said prior to the contest. “I had the upper hand in that game, we won, so I think he’s going to try and come out and win this one against me to make it even, but I’m not going to let that happen.”
