Ryan Smyth won't get a chance to play his way back into the coach's good books.
Not tonight, anyway. Smyth will be a healthy scratch when Edmonton (5-4-3) hosts the Dallas Stars (6-5-1), marking the first time he's been banished to the press box as an Oiler since his rookie season in 1995.
Smyth has been slow out of the gates this year, just one goal and one assist in 12 games as a third and fourth line checker. He’s also taken six obstruction/stick penalties in the last four games, including three last Sunday in Columbus.
