EDMONTON - Head coach Tom Renney sent his defencemen off the ice early Friday while the rest of the forwards continued with battle drills.

With four of the his top six injured, Renney needs to keep the remaining bodies healthy and rested because there are going to be some tough miles ahead.

“Most or all of us were top two guys at some point, we’re used to playing those minutes,” said Theo Peckham, who played 24:23 against Ottawa on Thursday after Andy Sutton (in pre-game warm-up) and Corey Potter went down.

“It’s another challenge. It’s situations like these that are going to help you out as a team, help you in the long run.”

With Sutton, Potter, Ryan Whitney and Cam Barker, out, the Oilers are left with Peckham, Tom Gilbert, Ladislav Smid, and Jeff Petry.

Colten Teubert and Taylor Chorney were called up from Oklahoma City.

Renney said he’s never seen a blueline get so banged up so quickly.

“To that extent, sure,” he said. “I don’t think I’ve ever had someone just prior to the national anthem hurt himself.”
