No big Friday plans for Oilers GM

When the free agent frenzy begins on July 1, don't expect the Edmonton Oilers to be leading the madness.

GM Steve Tambellini says he might just sit the opening few days out.

After re-signing Ryan Jones and landing Ryan Smyth from the LA Kings, he says the high-priority legwork is already done.

"I don't know if anything is going to happen," he said. "We already have some young players in some profile spots."

Tambellini will be looking more along the lines of the second-tier free agents - tough, experienced veterans who can provide strength and leadership during this transitional period.

"If I can find a player or two who gives us some of that poise and experience or some grit we'll do that. I don't know if it'll happen July 1 or July 20, but we'll move a couple of things here in the next little while."

He says they won't even bait a hook for the big fish.

"The 10 million player for us doesn't make sense for where we are as an organization."
