Souray back on waivers

EDMONTON - Oilers GM Steve Tambellini says he’s just casting a line by putting defenceman Sheldon Souray on recallable waivers.

Everybody wants defencemen, so why not throw one out there.

“In speaking to so many mangers over the last few weeks, recognizing how many people are looking for defencemen, this is an opportunity, I think, for some team, and for Sheldon,” said Tambellini, who has no gut feeling either way.

“I don’t know. I just know that everyone is asking for the same type of things out there and this is the right time.”

If Souray isn’t claimed, it’s expected the Oilers would send him back to Hershey in the AHL, but Tambellini wouldn’t comment.

“We’ll see what happens.”

Tambellini also wouldn’t say if another team asked that Souray be placed on waivers so they could grab him.

RESCIND BIN: Ladislav Smid was in the penalty box, with delay of game penalty already announced Saturday, when the officials changed their minds and gave him a pardon. It was the right call, replays clearly showed that the puck hit the glass before flying into the crowd, but nobody remembers seeing a referee change his mind before.

“I don’t know that I have,” said head coach Tom Renney.

LATE HITS: Lost in the excitement of Taylor Hall’s hat-trick on Saturday was a three-point night from Ales Hemsky. He has nine points in the last five games ... Shawn Horcoff went 64% in the faceoff circle (14-8).
