Centre suits Oilers’ Hall

SAN JOSE — Taylor Hall was happy with his first stint in the middle with the Edmonton Oilers.

The rookie forward played centre on the Oilers top line between Dustin Penner and Ales Hemsky in the team’s 3-2 loss to the Dallas Stars.

“I think it went well,” Hall said. “Once you get adjusted to how guys take draws, there are certain tactics that you can use. I started off well, then through the midpoint of the game wasn’t doing well, then I won my last four. So it was OK.”

Hall had five shots in the contest and finished 8-for13 in the faceoff circle. It’s expected he’ll play in the middle again Thursday against the San Jose Sharks.

“It’s a lot different, you get the puck at a different angle on the ice and you have to make decisions a lot faster because there’s usually forecheckers coming down on you,” Hall said. “I felt that I did have some good puck time and some good rushes.”

Despite playing half of last season in the NHL, Taylor Chorney never fooled himself into thinking he was here to stay.

And although disappointed when sent down to the minors at the beginning of the year, the Edmonton Oilers defenceman took it in stride, tried to make the best of the situation and continued to work in his pursuit of becoming a complete player.

“I think the hardest part was at the beginning getting sent down,” Chorney said. “After that, you just focus on playing hockey, there are a lot worse things that you could be doing.

“I’m still relatively young, I still have a lot to learn as a player and there are some things in my game that I need to improve on. Spending half the season down there to start, playing a lot on a good team down there definitely can’t hurt you.”

Chorney, 23, had 15 points in 40 games in Oklahoma City before being called up to play with the Oilers. Tuesday’s game was actually his third in four nights, having played two games on the weekend with the Barons.
