EDMONTON - Linus Omark is getting his shot.

With Ales Hemsky and Shawn Horcoff out with groin and knee injuries, the club recalled the Swedish winger, along with centre Ryan O’Marra, to help fill the voids.

“We lose offence with both players, certainly with Ales, so the proper fill in for him is our leading scorer down there, Linus,” said head coach Tom Renney. “He can play both wings so it’s a good fit from that point of view.”

Omark has 13 goals and 13 assists in 26 games, although five of the goals came on one night. He has ridiculous moves, to the point of being cocky, but whether or not the 5-9, 168-pounder can pull them off in the NHL remains to be seen.

“I don’t know if the stuff he could do prior to now can happen,” said Renney. “We’ll be realistic with that, allow this to emerge as it will.”

Fitting into team structure will be the first, and perhaps biggest hurdle.

“We want to encourage creativity,” said Renney. “I’ve said 100 times that the toughest thing to defend in the game is someone else’s imagination with the puck. We’re not going to stifle that, but we’re certainly going to stress the fact that we don’t turn pucks over. Be creative, do your thing, but play the team game.”

O’Marra, a 6-2, 193-pound two-way centre, has a goal and 13 assists in 22 games.

Hemsky will be out a month while Horoff is expected to be out eight weeks.
