EDMONTON - Martin Gerber is in and Ales Hemsky is out as the Edmonton Oilers attempt to snap a six-game home ice losing streak against the Colorado Avalanche.

Hemsky has a groin injury and is out for Thursday at least.

“I’d call it day to day, he has a little bit of a groin pull,” said head coach Tom Renney. “It’s more precautionary right now than anything. I think we’re doing the right thing under the circumstances.”

Hemsky is second to Ryan Whitney in team scoring with 15 points in 20 games.

In goal, Gerber, called up from Oklahoma City after Nikolai Khabibulin went down with a groin injury, gets his first start as an Oiler.

“He certainly deserves it, he’s worked very, very hard, he had an excellent training camp and he’s been everything you could hope for in Oklahoma City,” said Renney. “He’s certainly deserving of a start.”

Gerber’s been around, but when you haven’t played an NHL game in 18 months, there are going to be butterflies.

“It’s been a while,” he said. “I’ll try to keep things simple and go from there.”

Devan Dubnyk gets a break after starting three in a row in Khabibulin’s absence. He faced 116 shots in the three games.

Meanwhile, X-rays on Andrew Cogliano’s jaw were negative, but he wore a full face shield at the morning skate and might take it into Thursday’s game.

“I want to be in the game, I’m not going to take time off for a stitch or a cut,” said Cogliano, who was hit in the face with a Tom Gilbert shot last game in Phoenix. “It wasn’t broken or cracked, it’s just swollen and really tender, so if you take another hit you never know.”

Cogliano hasn’t had much luck lately, but he hopes to change that on a line with Dustin Penner and Gilbert Brule.

“We had a couple of good games together this year and had some good chemistry last year,” said Cogliano.
