EDMONTON - The Oilers placed discontented defenceman Sheldon Souray and backup netminder Martin Gerber on waivers Thursday, hoping to keep one and lose the other.

It's the second time this season they've put Souray on waivers in hope that somebody plucks him off the wire. If nobody does -- they didn't last summer -- the Oilers are free to send him to Oklahoma City of the AHL.

They could also ship him down and recall him, which would enable another club to pick him up for half price. Edmonton would be on the hook for the other half of his $4.5 million salary.

The 34-year-old defenceman is not welcome at Oilers main camp after ripping the organization last spring. He accused President of Hockey Operations Kevin Lowe of pressuring him to play before he was fully recovered from a shoulder injury and GM Steve Tambellini of not showing enough interest when Souray was in the hospital with an infected hand.

The Oilers are trying to get Gerber to Oklahoma City, where he'll split goaltending duties with either Devan Dubnyk or Jeff Deslauriers.

The Oilers also cut four players Thursday, defencemen Alex Plante, Taylor Chorney, Jeff Petry and winger Colin McDonald.
