PENTICTON, B.C. — Taylor Hall’s first point as an Edmonton Oiler came at 18:34 of the second period on Sept. 12, 2010.

Lucky for him it was an assist.

“I was wide open,” said Eberle, who converted Hall’s two-on-one set-up like a pro in Edmonton’s 4-1 win over Vancouver in the opening game of the prospects tournament. “So if he didn’t pass I was going to give him (crap).”

Just kidding. Eberle’s known Hall since they were kids and says he doesn’t need advice on how to generate offence.

“He’s a smart enough player, he knows how to make the decision between pass and shoot — there’s a reason he went first overall. He brings a lot of guys to him and gets you a lot of open ice.”

Hall was a little rusty and nervous in the first few minutes of his first game in an Oilers sweater, but he settled in nicely, and the line of he, Eberle and Milan Kytnar created at least a half-dozen good scoring chances.

“We had a practice Saturday and I thought we played very well together and sure enough we had some good chemistry,” he said. “I think if we can keep that up, maybe even into the main camp, it can give us a good shot at the team.”

Head coach Tom Renney called it a good first day.

“He played hard both ways, you can see there’s a level of intelligence there that separates him from others. I like the way he anticipates the game, and the competitiveness is certainly there. The first one is out of the way, so good for him, especially, and good for everybody.”

LATE HITS... Jeff Petry’s sore shoulder is no big deal, he says, and he expects to be in the lineup soon. “I have full mobility and the strength is there so I don’t think it’s going to be a problem.”... Camp invitee Dallas Ehrnhardt injured his knee at the morning skate and had to be helped off the ice. His status will be updated Monday.
