Nikolai Khabibulin's immediate future will be decided today when the Edmonton Oilers goalie is sentenced in Scottsdale, Ariz., after being convicted last week on three charges related to drunk driving.

The 37-year-old, signed by the Oilers in July 2009 to a four-year contract worth $15 million US , was convicted of extreme driving under the influence, excessive speed and driving under the influence with a blood alcohol level over .08.

Police stopped Khabibulin on Feb. 8 of this year after the Ferrari he was driving was clocked at 70 m.p.h. in a residential area near Scottsdale.

In Arizona, extreme drunk driving carries a mandatory 30-day jail sentence. The maximum sentence is six months.

"Both Nikolai and the Oilers organization recognize the severity of what has transpired. We plan on meeting with Nikolai, his agent and the National Hockey League in the near future," Oilers GM Steve Tambellini said in a statement released after the conviction was announced.
