Gilbert on a blistering pace

Tom Gilbert is getting better as the season gets older.

At least that’s what his recent point production would indicate.

Heading into Wednesday’s game against the Colorado Avalanche, the Oilers defenceman has 13 points in his last 13 games. He’s registered 10 of those points in his last eight games.

“Sometimes you just can’t explain how points come,” Gilbert said. “I’ve been finding the right spots at the right time. Playing with (Ryan) Whitney helps a lot, too. He allows me to jump up in the rush, which provides a little more offence for me. I think that’s made a big difference, too.”

Gilbert has thrived since Whitney arrived in from the Anaheim Ducks in a deal for Lubomir Visnovsky just prior to the trade deadline.

The departures of Visnovsky, Denis Grebeshkov and the loss of Sheldon Souray to injury, has also served to increase Gilbert’s ice time.

He’s now playing on the first power play unit and logging more minutes with Whitney than he ever did in the past.

“It’s been great playing with him, he communicates really well, he’s always in the right spots and makes it so much easier on his partner,” Gilbert said. “Half the time I don’t even seen him on the ice, but I know where he’s going to be. He’s always backing me up and fundamentally he’s solid. He plays the right position, he doesn’t get beat very often, he makes that first pass which is so huge in a game and that’s what allows me to jump up in the play.”

Moores to coach with Team Canada ... Former Oilers assistant coach Billy Moores is getting an opportunity to get back behind the bench.

On Tuesday Moores was named to Team Canada’s coaching staff for the upcoming World Championships in Germany.

Since being relieved of his coaching duties by the Oilers at the end of last season, Moores has been working with the team as a scout.

In Germany, Moores will be reunited with Craig MacTavish, who was named head coach of the team by general manager Mark Messier. Moores spent nine years as an assistant with the Oilers.

Florida Panthers head coach Peter DeBoer was also named as an assistant coach.

The tournament runs May 7-23 in Cologne and Mannheim, Germany.
