Neck injury sidelines Oilers' Smid for season

Oilers defenceman Ladislav Smid requires neck surgery and will miss the final 19 games of the season.

Elsewhere on the medical front, Sheldon Souray remains in hospital receiving treatment for an infection in his hand. Souray had a broken bone repaired several weeks ago but has run into complications.

"It's serious enough that they're keeping him the hospital," said head coach Pat Quinn.

And JF Jacques had surgery on his back, which will keep him out for the rest of the season as well.

Smid was injured Jan. 20 when he was run into the boards by Vancouver Canucks winger Mason Raymond.

He's had previous neck problems.
