It’s unlike NHLers to pounce on material that might be used to needle their opponents, so maybe posing for a magazine with a couple of naked buddies will go unnoticed by the league’s super pests.

Yeah, and maybe Ethan Moreau, Sheldon Souray and Andrew Cogliano, knew they were putting themselves out there, literally, when they agreed to pose in various stages of undress for ESPN Magazine’s The Body issue, but did it anyway in the name of art.

And so far, as the magazine hits newstands, there aren’t any regrets.

“I haven’t had too many comments yet from people,” said Cogliano, who’s wearing a towel in the photo while Souray and Moreau are covered only by a hockey helmet and glove, respectively.

“In our situation, we were asked by the NHL and we did it to represent the NHL and our team. We wouldn’t have done a photo shoot like that for some little magazine, but it’s ESPN and there’s 40 other top athletes, it was something to be a part of it.”

The issue features the likes of Serena Williams and MMA fighter Gina Carano, NASCAR driver Carl Edwards, and Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson.

“It was a little awkward doing the shoot, I’m not going to lie,” said Cogliano. “It was tough in that way, we couldn’t really have our say in what picture we wanted, it was left up to them. It’s a little unorthodox, I agree, but when people see it in context... We just hope that people don’t take it the wrong way and take it for what it is, trying to expose athletes’ bodies.”

Teammate and former roommate Sam Gagner says the photo is tasteful and professional, but that won’t stop the guys in the room from having fun with this.

“Oh, for sure,” he said. “Even if it does look good you have to ride them. Mind you, if I had that body I’d probably want to pose nude, too.”
