Goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin has been around long enough that he's not going to get nervous about an exhibition game, but he admits feeling a little excited about his first action as an Oiler tonight against Florida.

"Of course," said the 39-year-old. "It's been a whole summer with no games."

As much as he'd like to make a good impression in his debut for the new team and the new fans, he's not putting too much emphasis on a game that doesn't mean anything.

"You still have to look at the big picture and the big picture is to get ready for the season and have a good start then," he said. "But at the same time, any time I step on the ice I expect to have a good game and win.

"This one is not going to be any different."

Brule draws in

After opening training camp with a case of the flu, Gilbert Brule is healthy enough to go.

"With three games this weekend, there was no rush," he said. "But I'm really pumped, I want to get going."

Brule knows there's a glut of forwards, but he's just going to go out and play his game and let the math sort itself out.

"Every day I'm feeling better and more confident out there," he said.

"We're going to have a good look at him because he has skill," said head coach Pat Quinn.

The chopping block ...

The Oilers trimmed 13 players yesterday, sending Jamie Bates, Jordan Bendfeld, Kelly Czuy, Jesse Dudas, Riley Emmerson, Colton Fretter, Bryan Lerg, Ryan MacMurchy, Matt Nickerson, Andrew Perugini and Cody Wild to Springfield. Dalton Prout and Philipe Cornet went back to junior.
