Text to be talk of town for Oilers owner

EDMONTON -- So "MacT isn't going anywhere."

Maybe, Daryl Katz, you could text message somebody in the media to answer some other questions.

- What about Shawn Horcoff? Word is he's a pretty close friend to you as well as coach Craig MacTavish. What if new GM Steve Tambellini miraculously found somebody willing to take Horcoff's US$7-million contract for next year off your hands to open up salary cap room to get an actual second world-class player to go with Ales Hemsky? Would he be going anywhere?

- What about Dustin Penner and his contract? No word of a friendship there, but now that you are at least open to text messaging, if not actually doing interviews, to communicate in some way with the fans, how about five words on the subject of the way that one's turned out so far? You can use the caps button to get !@#$%^&- from the top of the keyboard to use as swear words.

- But first, how about texting five or six words on why you forced your close personal friend, Kevin Lowe, to the humiliating and embarrassing task of trying to explain why you sent the text message to the guy you personally had put into the broadcast booth this season instead of dropping down to the interview room and digging yourself out of your own mess?

- And how about four or five more words to clarify what Lowe eventually said.

Let us review:

Lowe: "He said he was extremely disappointed and somewhat frustrated by the fact we're in the middle of a playoff race and all the discussion and focus was on the future of our head coach, and he just found that rather odd. The fact it was on our pre-game show that he was listening to discussion on the future of our head coach. He just wanted to suppress that once and for all, it's as simple as that."

Question: "But will MacTavish be back?"

Lowe: "I think I answered that in the statement. I'm explaining his position."

So, just so we're clear here, Daryl. Can you send a clarification. One word would do. Is Mac back? Yes? No?

- What about Dwayne Roloson? Do you want him to be going anywhere? He's a free agent at the end of this season, has played more consecutive games (33 and counting) than any goalie his age in hockey history and is the only reason your team wasn't mathematically eliminated a couple weeks ago. Really curious on this one, Daryl, because as a columnist, I'm not sure of my own opinion on this one. The guy's going to be 40. If he's not going anywhere, then he could be the second coming of Johnny Bower. But he's likely going to want a two-year contract at the same money.

He could also be the second coming of Dwayne Roloson: 2007-2008 version. Is he going anywhere?

- And what about Oilers captain Ethan Moreau? Steve Staios? Those heart-and-soul guys who had so-so seasons. After a season like this (normally) major changes affecting the direction of the team are taken. Are those players going anywhere?

Do you have a list of others not going anywhere as well?

- Just in case MacTavish decides it makes no sense not to be going anywhere, especially not now, and decides to resign, can you tell us if you are friends with, say, Brent Sutter or Pat Quinn?

I know we're up to at least 35 words of text messaging here already, but while you're at it, maybe you'd like to text your thoughts on a few other Oiler topics to which a few folks (a.k.a. customers) have been waiting to hear answers to for while now.

- Is the Oilers abysmal record at home, not to mention entertainment value at home, going to be going anywhere?

- The team's play from the opening face-off and particularly during second periods?

- Will the penalty killing be going anywhere up from being 28th in the league?

- The faceoff percentage up from being 25th?

- The powerplay from being 21st in the league?

And, come to think of it, Daryl, it would be OK to send Lowe and/or Tambellini down to speak to some of that in your stead. We were willing to wait until mathematical elimination or even the end of the season for them to submit themselves for a good grilling, but, now ...
