Mac-gic touch for heavyweight

WASHINGTON -- You know things are going your way when Steve MacIntyre outscores Alex Ovechkin and Alex Semin.

Combined.

The Oilers heavyweight bettered both of the Russian superstars yesterday, scoring the first goal of his NHL career on a night when neither of them could find any twine.

"I've seen a lot of things happen in games," laughed Craig MacTavish. "Their skill guys had about four or five point-blank opportunities and then Mac buries his first of the year. I knew it was going to be a good night. Everybody was energized by that."

It wasn't a thing of beauty, his long wrister that slid through a sea of legs and came to rest at the back of Washington's net, but it looked like it to him.

"I was just trying to put it on net and it had eyes," grinned MacIntyre, who scored in just his third game back from two months on the shelf with a fractured orbital bone. "Honestly I didn't even know it went in. Brodie (Kyle Brodziak) came over to me and said 'You scored.' I said 'You're kidding me.'

"I'd like to tell you I was aiming five-hole ..."

His teammates seemed happier than he was.

"Everybody was excited for him," said Sam Gagner. "It's a really big moment for him, a guy who's battled his way up. It was pretty awesome to see."

MacIntyre, as Ethan Moreau likes to say, is living the dream.

"It's such a tremendous feeling when you're playing for a team you grew up watching and you're fortunate enough to score a goal and be on the ice with guys like Fedorov, Souray, unbelievable hockey players," said MacIntyre. "It's surreal, you kind of have to pinch yourself."

Going into the contest, the buzz was about a potential match up with Donald Brashear, but they were never close enough to even get a decent stare down going.

"The game kind of dictated itself," said MacIntyre. "We never really did get on the ice at the same time. It just didn't happen. It would have been pretty cool if that happened, but that's just the way it is."
