The Oilers' Zack Stortini fell awkwardly to the ice during a third-period fight last night and appeared to suffer a broken leg. The video replay - which resembled Joe Theismann's famous injury - brought groans of horror from the crowd at Rexall Place.

Meanwhile, Oilers defenceman Sheldon Souray had left the game late in the second period and did not return for the third. The Oilers would only say that it is an upper body injury.

Andrew the old man

It's not often Andrew Cogliano is one of the oldest guys on the ice, but he will be during All-Star weekend.

The 21-year-old is one of 10 sophomores taking part in the annual YoungStars competition - featuring 10 of the NHL's best rookies against 10 of the league's best sophomores - on Jan. 24 in Montreal.

This is Cogliano's first appearance in a YoungStars game. He adds his name to a long list of Edmonton players who been invited since the game was added to the All-Star festivities in 2001. The list: Mike Comrie (2001-02), Ales Hemsky (2002-03, selected but did not play due to injury), Shawn Horcoff (2002-03, replaced Hemsky), Alexei Semenov and Raffi Torres (2003-04), Ladislav Smid (2006-07) and Sam Gagner (2007-08).

This is the first year that sophomores have been added; they're taking on the rookies in the hopes of adding a more competitive element to what has traditionally been a low-intensity line rushes with the rookies.

Cogliano is tied for the team lead in goals (12) and is fifth in scoring with 21 points.

Jump-starting Penner

Craig MacTavish was answering more questions about Dustin Penner yesterday morning as the big winger slides back into the same fog that enveloped him earlier in the season.

"If he's going. we're generally a pretty good team," said MacTavish. "He's got to get it going, there's no place to hide there (on the first line). It's a big focal position.

"He had eight or nine really good games. Now, without Ales (Hemsky) I think it's affected him, but he's got to find a way to be a contributor. Right now the thing that's holding us back is the first line."
