Sam Gagner skated on his sore leg yesterday and might be ready when the Oilers visit the Chicago Blackhawks tomorrow.

"I'm just taking it day by day, I'm optimistic I can be back soon," said Gagner, who sat out Saturday's game after taking an awkward hit Friday night in Calgary.

"I got hit funny (Friday) and the next day my leg was hurting a little bit. Hopefully I can be ready on Wednesday.

"I expect to, but I don't know how it will react to skating. It could be just the same (sore again) but I think it's going to get better. I'm hoping I can play in Chicago."

Head coach Craig MacTavish says there's no rush.

After watching a couple of players come back too soon last season, then reinjure themselves, he's going to give Gagner all the time he needs.

"We're going to be patient, not just with him but with all our injuries this year," said MacTavish.

"We're not going to have guys come back before they're ready to come back, especially with young players who don't have the experience to deal with these things.

"We'll see how he feels (Tuesday), if he feels good we'll get him back in his regular spot."

Meanwhile, Sheldon Souray (leg) didn't skate yesterday and isn't expected to play in Chicago tomorrow.

With back-to-back games tomorrow and Thursday (Chicago-Colorado), expect Dwayne Roloson to get his first start of the year.
