Crowded crease situation is what it is

JASPER -- Add Kevin Lowe's name to the list of people who aren't crazy about Edmonton starting the season with three goalies.

But the Oilers president of hockey operations says they're just not ready to make a decision yet on what to do with Mathieu Garon, Dwayne Roloson and rookie Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers, who could be lost on waivers if the Oilers send him to Springfield.

"That's a really tough thing for the goalies, awkward, but they're handling it really well right now," said Lowe.

"It's not a perfect situation but... Jeff Deslauriers certainly deserves the opportunity to be here. We're just going to make the best of it, but we have no clear plan right now. But we do know from experience that things tend to sort themselves out."

- The Oilers submitted their 23-man roster to the NHL yesterday and Rob Schremp's name wasn't on it (Steve MacIntyre's is). But Schremp hasn't been officially demoted to Springfield yet. His grandfather just passed away and the NHL CBA allows teams to delay assignments and transactions to allow players a few days of bereavement.

Mathieu Roy (wrist) will begin the season on injured reserve, so he doesn't count against the 23-man limit.

- Craig MacTavish was laughing at the irony of being the only guy on the team wearing a helmet during the team bike rides in Jasper.

"That was unusual, that I was the only guy wearing a helmet," grinned the last player in the NHL to go without a helmet.

"Maybe it has nothing to do with safety, maybe it's just a contrarian thing."
