Craig MacTavish cut nine players yesterday, but only after the Oilers forced his hand with its lifeless 4-0 loss to Calgary.

"We just have to get down to the numbers, that was pretty clear Tuesday night," said MacTavish.

"We need to reduce the amount of players we have here and get down to a more workable number. Based on what happened Tuesday it's more urgent that we get a few more games for some of our veterans."

The Oilers sent goaltender Devan Dubnyk and forwards Adam Huxley, Liam Reddox, Tim Sestito, Tyler Spurgeon and Viacheslav Trukhno to Springfield.

"Some of those guys played very well, they're all making progress," said MacTavish.

"They're all good players. It bodes well for us if we run into injury problems and it bodes well for Springfield."

Centre Ryan Potulny and winger Carl Corazzini were placed on waivers for the purpose of assignment, while right winger Guillaume Lefebvre was released from his professional tryout agreement.

The cuts leave Edmonton with the following 28 players.

Goalies:Mathieu Garon, Dwayne Roloson, Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers.

Defencemen: Sheldon Souray, Lubomir Visnovsky, Tom Gilbert, Denis Grebeshkov, Ladislav Smid, Steve Staios, Mathieu Roy, Jason Strudwick, Taylor Chorney, Theo Peckham

Forwards:Kyle Brodziak, Gilbert Brule, Andrew Cogliano, Erik Cole, Sam Gagner, Ales Hemsky, Shawn Horcoff, Steve MacIntyre, Ethan Moreau, Robert Nilsson, Dustin Penner, Fernando Pisani, Marc Pouliot, Rob Schremp, Zack Stortini.
