It's tough to be a setup man on a team of ham-handed players, so one of the Oilers first priorities will be to get Ales Hemsky a couple of snipers.
Hemsky, by his own lofty standards, didn't have a great season - just 53 points in 64 games.
"We need to get him some further help," said MacTavish. "A player who can skate with him, think with him, who can shoot the puck.
''We have to give him some help. It would be nice to get a real high-end free agent in here. He can't do it himself at this level."
Friend, teammate and former linemate Petr Sykora said Hemsky needs to be surrounded by one-shot scorers, of which he's one.
"He made that step (to elite player) this season, he just didn't have the scorers around him," said Sykora.
"Look at Thornton (Joe). On his power play all four guys have 30 plus goals. Jonathan Cheechoo has 50.
''You put Hemmer with me and another guy who scores 30 goals and he's going to get 90 helpers."
"Whether I like it or not I'm a big part of this team and I have to be ready to go next year, or it's going to be big trouble again."
