Brodziak gets the call

This is what you call adding injury to insult.

Ryan Smyth is gone, so are the playoffs, and the only thing higher than the frustration level is the body count.

Ales Hemsky, Ethan Moreau, Jarret Stoll, Daniel Tjarnqvist, Marty Reasoner, Tom Gilbert, Mathieu Roy and Petr Nedved are all out.

Between the bumps and the off-season moves, there are only six players in the lineup from last year's Stanley Cup final.

"We're in the emergency situation in more ways than one," said head coach Craig MacTavish, after the Oilers summoned Kyle Brodziak from Wilkes-Barre on emergency recall yesterday.

"I've never seen us this beaten up as a team," said defenceman Steve Staios, who missed nine games with a knee injury earlier this year.

Only five Oilers, Petr Sykora, Shawn Horcoff, Joffrey Lupul, Jason Smith and Raffi Torres have escaped the injury bug.

"It's unreal," said Fernando Pisani, who sat out five games with a concussion. "It's one of those years. A lot of concussions. I have no idea why it's happening."

Torres, who played all 82 last year and 80 the year before, can't explain his good fortune, but is glad he's managed to stay healthy.

"They're dropping like crazy around here," he said. "It's a tough game, a tough spot, one little thing goes the wrong way and ... you hate to see it."

Hemsky is out a week to 10 days with a sore shoulder.

Brodziak was second in scoring for Wilkes-Barre with 21 goals and 25 assists in 49 games. The St. Paul product is also plus-11 for the Penguins' farm team.

HE'S MAKING A LIST ...

MacTavish said he's been keeping a close eye on who plays hard and who quits now that the Oilers are out of it. He liked what he saw Saturday against Calgary.

"I thought we played hard and that's basically all I'm asking at this point," he said. "We're in a difficult situation with the way we've played up until this point and some of the injuries, but the one thing you can control is to go out there and play hard."
