If anyone might be visibly upset at Ryan Smyth leaving the Edmonton Oilers' locker- room, Shawn Horcoff would be a prime candidate.
Playing beside Smyth for nearly the last three years, the pair had very good chemistry at times, leading the offensive charge along with the other winger on the line, Ales Hemsky.
But Horcoff is coming to the defence of general manager Kevin Lowe, supporting his decision to deal Smyth.
"Kevin made a tough decision and I don't think you wish that upon anyone," stated Horcoff.
"When it wasn't going to get done financially, why would you take a chance of losing a guy like Ryan Smyth for nothing?
"Kevin's hands were tied.
"You have to get something for Ryan.
"He is one of the elite players in the game."
The trade doesn't immediately bring anyone into the locker-room to pick up the offensive slack.
However, Horcoff is looking down the road.
"We got two first rounders and a first-round pick out of it - and maybe the possibility of entertaining the fact of bringing him back in the summer," suggested Hor-coff.
"And I'm sure they will bring in one or two guys (through free agency in the summer)."
