Oil crisis in Edmonton

Edmonton traded F Ryan Smyth to the Islanders for prospects Robert Nilsson and Ryan O'Marra and a first-round draft pick in 2007.

Sun MEDIA SAYS: Definitely the most surprising trade of the day. GM Kevin Lowe couldn't get a deal done with Smyth, so he dealt the heart and soul of the Oilers. That huge sigh of disbelief has to be coming from teams who probably wanted in on the Smyth sweepstakes, but didn't get the chance. The Oilers wanted to get something for a guy who was going to be an unrestricted free agent, but there may not be an impact player coming their way. This deal is huge for the Islanders, who all of a sudden are in the playoff mix.

FLYERS HAVE A 'KEEPER

Buffalo traded G Martin Biron to Philadelphia for second-round 2007 draft pick.

Sun Media says: Biron deserves a chance to start somewhere and picking up a second-rounder is fair value ... if you turn that second-rounder into another asset.

WING AND A PRAYER

Detroit picked up RW Todd Bertuzzi from Florida for C Shawn Matthias and two conditional draft picks.

Sun Media says: A great gamble. A very good team just stepped it up if Bertuzzi can put his back woes behind him. If the Wings weren't in the Stanley Cup hunt, they are now.

HABS TAKE A FLYER

Montreal claimed G Michael Leighton off waivers from Philadelphia.

Sun Media says: Won't be the answer to the Habs' goaltending woes. Why not Curtis Joseph or Ed Belfour?

NO A-WARD WINNER

The Rangers sent D Aaron Ward to Boston for D Paul Mara.

Sun Media says: One underachieving blueliner for another. Both teams still have playoff hopes.

SABRES TY ONE ON

Buffalo got G Ty Conklin from Columbus for fifth-round 2007 draft pick.

Sun Media says: Let's see ... if Ryan Miller goes down, Ty Conklin is your starting goalie. Okay, Sabres fans ... say your prayers.

PENS MIGHTIER

Pittsburgh got F Gary Roberts from Florida for D Noah Welch.

Sun Media says: A great deal for Pittsburgh. Not that the Penguins noticed or anything, but they could play Ottawa in the first round of the playoffs ... and Roberts is a Senator killer. Would have been a great fit in Ottawa, but Sens wouldn't pay the price.

HALE SPORTS NEW JERSEY

New Jersey dealt D David Hale and a 2007 fifth-rounder to Calgary for a 2007 third-rounder.

Sun Media says: Not much offensive potential, but former first-rounder very solid and should be a good fit in Flames' system.

LARAQUE AND ROLL

Phoenix dealt W Georges Laraque to Pittsburgh for F Daniel Carcillo and a third-round pick.

Sun Media says: No more bullying Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.

SHARKS FIT THE BILL

San Jose acquired F Bill Guerin from St. Louis for first-round 2007 draft pick, F Ville Nieminen and F Jay Barriball.

Sun Media says: Huge for the Sharks. Many teams were in the chase for Guerin, who would have been a great fit in Detroit, Anaheim, Ottawa ... and maybe Calgary. You've gotta wonder why another team wouldn't ante up more than the price the Sharks paid.

STARS PAY KINGS' RANSON

Dallas dealt Ds Jaroslav Modry, Johan Fransson, a 2008 No. 1 and second- and third-rounders in 2007 to Los Angeles for D Mattias Norstrom, W Konstatin Pushkarev and 2007 third- and fourth-rounders.

Sun Media says: Norstrom is a captain and a warrior, but he's also a bit lost in the "new" NHL. Price was a bit steep.

ZUBRUS' PRICE A BIT STEEP

Buffalo acquired C Dainius Zubrus and D Timo Helbling from Washington for C Jiri Novotny and first-round 2007 draft pick.

Sun Media says: Sabres panicked on this one. Was a stiff price to pay for Zubrus.

LEAFS HAVE YANIC ATTACK

Phoenix traded C Yanic Perreault and a fifth-round draft pick in 2008 to Toronto for D Brendan Bell and a second-round pick in 2008.

Sun Media says: Perreault may not be enough to help the Leafs reach the playoffs, but he'll help at a decent price.

SENS BREAK AN OLEG

Phoenix dealt W Oleg Saprykin and a 2007 seventh-rounder to Ottawa for a second-rounder in 2008.

Sun Media says: For the most part, the Sens' trade deadline deals have been busts. Ottawa is timid about trading top prospects and top draft picks ... and didn't get the physical winger they may need.

WIDEMAN THE B'S KNEES?

Boston dealt C Brad Boyes to St. Louis for D Dennis Wideman.

Sun Media says: Could help both teams. Boyes has offensive promise, but Wideman is cheaper and could provide some spark from the blue line.

WORTH NOTING ...

Atlanta acquired W Pascal Dupuis and a 2007 third-round pick from the Rangers for prospect W Alex Bourret ... Phoenix claimed F Niko Kapanen off waivers from Atlanta ... Los Angeles dealt W Jason Ward to Tampa Bay for a 2007 fifth-rounder. ... Florida dealt D Joel Kwiatkowski to Pittsburgh for a 2007 fourth-rounder ... Tampa Bay dealt W Nikita Alexeev to Chicago for W Karl Stewart and a 2007 sixth-rounder ... Anaheim dealt G Michael Wall for Avs W Brad May ... Pittsburgh acquired a 2007 third-rounder from Minnesota for W Dominic Moore ... San Jose dealt W Scott Parker to Colorado for a 2008 sixth-rounder ... Nashville sent D Mikko Lehtonen to Buffalo for a 2007 fourth-rounder ... Pittsburgh picked up G Nolan Schaefer from San Jose for a 2007 seventh-rounder ... Los Angeles acquired D Jamie Heward from Washington for a 2008 conditional draft pick.

WINNERS

San Jose ... Bill Guerin gives them possibly best 1-2 forward-line punch in NHL.

Detroit ... Todd Bertuzzi gives them anger, grit and goal scoring if he's healthy.

Pittsburgh ... Gary Roberts and Georges Laraque just what the doctor ordered for a young Penguins team.

NY Islanders ... Dealing for Ryan Smyth is a gamble, but one that could take them to playoffs.

Washington ... Great value for Dainius Zubrus ... Jiri Novotny could be just as good.

St. Louis ... Just needs to make good use of the draft picks.

Atlanta ... Keith Tkachuk, a pre-deadline pickup, will help.

Nashville ... Peter Forsberg could be huge.

Vancouver ... Picked up Bryan Smolinski and Brent Sopel the day before deadline.

LOSERS

Anaheim ... Guerin? Bertuzzi? Smyth? GM Brian Burke missed the boat ... and young Ducks could get early playoff exit.

Ottawa ... Needed a physical force and went and got Oleg Saprykin. Refused to part with top draft picks or top prospects.

Edmonton ... Kiss slim playoff hopes goodbye. Needed to get an impact prospect for Smyth.

Minnesota ... A good team didn't get better. Only move was acquiring Dominic Moore.

Buffalo ... A very good team when healthy, but gave up way too much to get Zubrus. Ty Conklin is a disaster as a backup goalie. Just ask the Oilers.

Montreal ... Needed goaltending help. Curtis Joseph and Ed Belfour were available.
