Horror hit a blank for Gilbert

Tom Gilbert remembers the national anthem in Columbus.

After that it's a blank.

"I don't remember the game," Gilbert said yesterday. "I can't remember any part of the game. It's definitely something new for me. It's not a lot of fun."

Gilbert suffered a concussion after being drilled by Columbus Blue Jackets forward Jody Shelley on Thursday in the Oilers' 4-0 win.

He spent that night in a Columbus hospital and rejoined the team in St. Paul, Minnesota. The native of Minneapolis watched yesterday's game against the Wild from the press box.

"For me it sucks because it was my fourth game, I had just scored and had a lot of confidence going into the game," said Gilbert, who rode the bike without any negative effects yesterday. He's not sure when he'll be back.

"Now I get set back maybe a week or two weeks. I like to pride myself on not getting hit and getting away from players. Now I've suffered my first concussion, which is not good."

Gilbert was drilled coming out from behind his net halfway through the first period. The hit set the tone for what proved to be a physical affair.

"I've seen the video plenty of times," Gilbert said. "I have to take notes on what I can do to avoid a 260-pound guy coming at you. I think maybe a lot of it was my head hitting the ice when I fell back. That was probably a big part of it, too.

"I was pretty out of it that night. Some guys were telling me that I was asking them the same question over and over. I know when I woke up (the next day) I felt a lot better and everything started coming back to me."

Along with the memory loss, Gilbert is also sporting a cut over his lip.

"I have no idea how I got it," he said. "Maybe it was his elbow, or his shoulder or maybe even my visor, I don't know."
