TORONTO -- No news. But good news to come?

Kevin Lowe finally met with agent Don Meehan yesterday.

"Nothing to announce," said Lowe of morning meetings with Ryan Smyth's agent prior to the Oilers' GM flying to Florida for meetings which begin today.

"It was a good, friendly, meeting with both sides assessing everything. We both want to keep our conversations private, but the discussion was very open and frank and the relationship is really good," said Lowe.

Smyth, who scored his 29th goal of the season against the Toronto Maple Leafs here Saturday night, is an unrestricted free agent next season. The trade deadline is Feb. 27.

Lowe said it's an interesting negotiation because it's not just about signing a good hockey player.

"Most people want Ryan to remain an Oiler.

"In the East you can't go anywhere without people saying 'He's an Oiler.' "

That said, Lowe explained he's not going to be losing his head.
