TORONTO -- Kevin Lowe did not meet with Ryan Smyth's agent Don Meehan as planned here yesterday.
"No. We got busy doing some other stuff,'' said the Edmonton Oilers' GM.
He was on the phone all day talking trade.
"It's getting a little hectic. There's a lot of positioning. It's starting to involve more teams.''
So, is he close to doing a deal?
"Aaaaahhhhh,'' said Lowe.
That was before the game.
After, did, "aaaaaahhhh'' just became 'aaaaaahhhhh, yeah!'?"
Whatever, Lowe and Meehan said the two would meet to discuss the contract of about-to-be-free-agent Smyth today before Lowe heads to Naples, Fla., for general manager meetings.
NEW YORK (AP) -- Brendan Shanahan was hospitalized yesterday after a hard collision with Philadelphia's Mike Knuble that left the New York Rangers' forward unconscious on his back for several minutes.
Shanahan skated toward the bench as Knuble came the other way. Neither player saw the other and they slammed shoulder-to-shoulder.
Shanahan went flying backward and struck his head against the ice when he fell 7:27 into the third period of the Rangers' 5-3 loss.
X-rays and a CT scan were taken on Shanahan. All the tests were negative, but Shanahan was to be kept overnight for observation.
DETROIT (CP) -- The Detroit Red Wings re-signed veteran forward Tomas Holmstrom to a three-year contract yesterday. Holmstrom, 34, has developed into a consistent scorer in recent years, reaching the 20-goal mark in three of his last four seasons.
MONTREAL (CP) -- Canadiens goaltender Cristobal Huet will undergo surgery to repair a torn left hamstring and will be out of action indefinitely. The surgery was to be performed today.
