NEW YORK -- Glen Sather is coming back.
Mark Messier's old coach and GM is coming to Edmonton, complete with his deadline day staff, to attend the banner-raising for No. 11.
Messier's number will be raised to the rafters to join those of Oiler teammates Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri, Grant Fuhr and Paul Coffey on Feb. 27 - the same day as the NHL's trade deadline.
"We're coming. We'll do it out of there," said Sather of the deadline dealing.
"Instead of bringing everybody to New York, we'll take them to Edmonton."
Sather said there are some logistical challenges but none that can't be overcome in today's computer world. He envisions doing it all in a hotel suite.
"We'll have our four pro scouts there, my assistant general manager and, of course, my capologist," he said of the complications in doing draft deals with the new math involving the salary cap.
Tickets aren't going to be a problem.
"We'll probably sit in the press box," he said of watching the ceremonies and the game between the Oilers and Wayne Gretzky's Phoenix Coyotes to follow.
"I just think it is the right thing to do," he said of coming to Edmonton. "It's a request by Mark to be there.
"And Cal Nichols phoned as well," he added of the Oilers' ownership group chairman.
