Wait and 'C' on Smyth contract

Ryan Smyth wants nothing to do with the idea that a new contract for him here could result in him becoming captain.

"As long as Jason Smith is here, he'd be the captain of the team," said Smyth.

"He has my respect and the entire team's respect as captain."

Smyth said such an idea certainly would not be part of any contract negotiations.

As for the negotiations?

"Confidential," he said.

Smyth admits he now knows the details of the first serious offer made to keep him here for the rest of his career, a four- to six-year contract offered by GM Kevin Lowe.

"I think it's appropriate for both sides to keep it confidential right now," he added.

Lowe made the offer to agent Don Meehan on Friday, but Meehan didn't tell the player the details until after the weekend games against San Jose and Los Angeles.

"We've talked about it but I'm going to leave it to Kevin and Donnie."
