Last chance saloon?

While the Oilers are slumping miserably, and have an open spot on the 23-man roster, Craig MacTavish wants to hold off on an airlift for now.

But he and Kevin Lowe have one hand on the phone.

"We have some guys (in the AHL) who are playing OK down there,'' he said, mentioning Kyle Brodziak, Marc-Antoine Pouliot and Danny Syvret specifically. "We've got some options. My sense right now is to put the pressure on the players and give them the ability to dig themselves out of this collectively for another game or two before we go that route. But it's going to be imminent of we can't dig ourselves out of this collectively.''

NOT FOND MEMORIES: Raffi Torres remembers how bad it was last year, after Edmonton lost its seventh game in a row. But he says it turned around in an instant. "That was an all-time low. Guys were angry at each other, you could cut the tension in the room with a knife. But all it took was one game to get back to basics, hard work and enjoy playing the game again.

"Then we won five in a row. We've got some winnable games ahead of us, we could still come out of this trip 3-1-1.''
